The bible is *tradition*. We don't read it for (scientific) "truth". Tradition isn't truth. Think of this as a mantra, or meditation. We're training our minds to seek the "good" AND to accept "love" (from others / using "God" as an ideal). We understand from this passage that "it" will be returned to us (good and / or love) in an "ideal" way (regarding God as It). And we "pray" (meditate with a goal) that "God" (our father, for example) love us and be good to us: This "dispels" (in a ritualistic way) our feelings of fear and alienation. It is a form of wish fulfillment, perhaps. Which makes god EXACTLY an "imaginary friend".
